Romanian Embassy Honors First Graduates of Pakistan’s Pioneering Opera Singing Program

Islamabad: Embassy of Romania Celebrates Graduates of Groundbreaking Opera Singing Courses

The Embassy of Romania in Pakistan, in collaboration with the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), honored the students of the country’s pioneering opera singing program during a certificate award ceremony held at the Embassy in Islamabad on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.

The event celebrated the achievements of students who successfully completed the Opera Singing Courses conducted at the PNCA, an initiative that has introduced European classical and operatic traditions to aspiring Pakistani vocalists and strengthened cultural ties between Romania and Pakistan.

The ceremony was attended by Romania’s Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Dan Stoenescu, renowned Romanian soprano Georgiana Costea-Glugă, Chairman of the Pakistan-Romania Friendship Association Zaildar Shah, Director General of PNCA Muhammad Ayoub Jamali, Incharge of Music Classes at PNCA Ghulam Muhammad, as well as the students who received certificates in recognition of their dedication and achievements.

The award recipients included Imran Parvez Khan, Iria Siona, Ayzer Adeel, and Mohammad Tayyab Akbar, who have become the first group of Pakistani students to complete this unique educational program.

Describing the initiative as an important milestone in cultural cooperation, Ambassador Dan Stoenescu said the graduating students had made history by laying the foundation for a new artistic tradition in Pakistan.

“The certificates we present today represent only the first tangible result of a long-term endeavor. These four award recipients are much more than graduates of a course; they are officially the pioneers of opera music in Pakistan. Their dedication, perseverance, and passion have laid the foundations for a new artistic tradition and opened a path for future generations of Pakistani performers,” he said.

The Ambassador noted that cultural diplomacy plays a vital role in bringing nations closer together and fostering mutual understanding beyond political and economic relations. Through initiatives such as these opera courses, Romania and Pakistan continue to build meaningful people-to-people connections based on shared artistic experiences.

Romanian soprano Georgiana Costea-Glugă, who has been leading the training sessions since the program’s inception, praised the students for their commitment and progress throughout the course.

“These students are opening an entirely new path for future generations and demonstrating that music is a universal language that transcends all borders. I am extremely proud of their progress and firmly convinced that this is only the beginning of an extraordinary artistic journey,” she remarked.

The Opera Singing Courses were launched on 9 April 2025 as a joint initiative of the Embassy of Romania and the Pakistan National Council of the Arts. Since then, the classes have been conducted twice a week at PNCA, offering Pakistani students an opportunity rarely available in the country’s cultural landscape.

The program was designed to familiarize participants with the rich heritage of Romanian and European opera while promoting intercultural dialogue through the performing arts. Under the professional guidance of Georgiana Costea-Glugă, students received training in the essential components of lyrical performance.

The curriculum focused on developing core skills required in opera singing, including vocal technique, breath control, stage presence, musical interpretation, diction, and artistic expression. Beyond technical instruction, the initiative encouraged participants to gain confidence as performers and explore new dimensions of musical creativity.

For many observers, the program represents more than a music course. It stands as an example of how cultural diplomacy can create lasting connections between societies, enabling artists, educators, and institutions to collaborate across borders.

Since its launch, the initiative has highlighted the transformative power of the arts in promoting dialogue, learning, and mutual respect. By introducing opera to young Pakistani performers, the program has opened new avenues for artistic growth and broadened the country’s cultural horizons.

Officials from both the Embassy of Romania and PNCA reaffirmed their commitment to expanding educational and artistic opportunities in the future. They emphasized that continued collaboration in the fields of culture and education would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Romania and Pakistan.

Importantly, the Opera Singing Courses remain open to aspiring vocalists from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Whether beginners eager to discover opera for the first time or music enthusiasts seeking professional guidance, participants are encouraged to join a dynamic learning environment that nurtures talent and creativity.

As the first graduates of this pioneering initiative received their certificates, the ceremony marked not just the completion of a course, but the beginning of what many hope will become a vibrant and enduring opera tradition in Pakistan—one built on passion, artistic excellence, and the shared cultural values that unite people across borders.
